Should firms price discriminate Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Should firms price discriminate - Essay Example Therefore, PD can be defined as the situation in which price charged to a customer can be based partly on the value of the good to the customer, rather than just on the cost of producing the good itself (Paul, 1987). As a result, allowing a firm to capture all or most of the consumer surplus, increasing overall profit of the firm. Although this definition is different, it highlights an importance of utility and consumer surplus theorems allowing us to analyze how firms might use their monopoly power. In other words, how PD could be applied, so maximum profit can be gained in different monopoly markets. First of all in order to discuss the usefulness of PD as a profit maximizing tool, we should identify the conditions that firm must meet in order to price discriminate. According to Fritz Machlup, (Fritz, 1955)there are three main prerequisites, firstly, a firm has to have the monopoly power in order to set the price. For example, if a firm is a price taker and its operates in perfectly competitive market it cannot price discriminate as demand curve is perfectly elastic, therefore there is no consumer surplus to capture, whereas if a firm is a monopoly it has a downward sloping demand curve therefore, there are some consumers who are willing to pay more than the uniform price. Secondly, for different groups of consumers it is necessary to have different price elasticity. For example, assume that all consumer groups have the same price elasticity then ceteris paribus; monopoly firm does not have an incentive to apply PD as the profit will be the same as a firm would have applied sing le price strategy. The third criteria, is that a firm must be able to prevent an arbitrage, in other words preventing resale of its products. For instance, why do Apple restricts on the number of IPhones that can be purchased, it is not because Apple products are exclusive, the reason is to prevent an arbitrage. Some people might buy IPhones in the US and sell them in the

Analyzing Brazilian Movie Essay Example for Free

Analyzing Brazilian Movie Essay The movie â€Å"Behind the Sun† is a Brazilian film, entitles â€Å"Abril Despedacado† in Portuguese, based to the novel â€Å"Shattered April† originally written by multi awarded Albanian writer â€Å"Ismail Kadare†. The film was released in the year 2001, directed by a multi-talented and reputable Brazilian movie director â€Å"Walter Salles†, and produced by an Academy film producer â€Å"Arthur Cohn†. Although, the movie was not able to garner major movie awards and recognition, director Walter Salless Behind the Sun, had received a bunch of positive feedbacks from different movie critics and fanatics from countries across the globe. (IGN Entertainment, Inc. ) Nevertheless, the Brazilian motion picture â€Å"Behind the Sun† is said to be one of the successful movie, produced and done in Brazil. Technically, the movie Behind the Sun is a thematic drama and thrilling film, which tells the story between the bloods battle of two Brazilian families, who are battling for land rights. Essentially, the storyline of the film is a depiction of the family struggles, which shows the extent of family desire to revenge for their aggravated member of the clan, a result of personal and objective desire to own a merely useless and forgotten land. The movie shows the true color of elderly Brazilian family members to chase their desire to own a land, specifically, the movie tells the bloody battle tale of two Brazilian family, the â€Å"Breeves Family† and the â€Å"Ferreiras Family†, as they struggle for long been quarrel on the unproductive land. Moreover, the story line runs through the bloody family conflict, as the scenes are depictions of offensive actions against the two different oppositions in the movie. Most of the scenes in the movie, are the bloody picture of killing between the two young Brazilian gentlemen (teenagers) from both side of the family, as they act their revenge for their murdered family member, cause by their long been family quarrel over a destitute land. Nonetheless, the story line of the movie Behind the Sun is a depiction of the long been bloody tale for land rights, between two Brazilian families, the â€Å"Breeves† and the â€Å"Ferreiras†, and a struggle for honor. Moreover, the story of the movie â€Å"Behind the Sun† had happened way back 1910, as the Breeves and the Ferreiras argued for a merely useless land. The movie takes place in the â€Å"Northeast part of Brazil†, which is also known as the†badland†. Technically, the Northeast of part Brazil is the settings of the movie, where the two families quarrel over a property right of a dying sugarcane land. Since, the movie happened in the year 1910 and in the northeast of Brazil, the primary characters or the two families finds their way of living through the blessings of their land. Meaning, the Breeves and the Ferreiras makes their living through agriculture. In addition to this, the movie tells a profound family relationship, on which the Breeves and Ferreiras show in-depth family relationship and closed family links. Nevertheless, the movie is depiction of the true color of Brazilian family, which is united, loving and brave, ready to fight for their family members and honor. Movie Production, on the other hand, is awesomely amazing, as the directors, actors and the rest of the people responsible for the movie do their job really well for this project. Starting from camera angles, the director and camera man had done a great job, as the shots in the movie are appropriately done to give superb detail in every scene or event. The camera angles are perfect, as far as I can say that it gives the right shot, which the specific scene and happenings requires. Technically, the Cinematography of the movie is equally great as the camera angles and shot. The films cinematography gives fine details for every scene, as the movie introduces a profound definition of cinematography for the movie Behind the Sun. Since, the movie is a tale of bloody family battle, happened in the early 19th century (1910), in the Northeast part of Brazil, the lights and colors of the movie, supports, enhances and provide the needed emotions in every scenes. Nevertheless, The cinematography or the lighting and the color of the movie, makes the story, every scene and the whole film realistic, as if it was shoot way back 1910. Costumes props and the settings of the movie, on the other hand, are all timely and appropriate with the portrayal of 1910 era. The props men and the creative director, have definitely done their job at the very best they can. The costumes and the cultural settings of the movie, like early Brazilian agricultural materials are reproduce appropriate and was used accordingly. Even the food, are all timely to the 1910 era and the way of living as well as the whole surroundings are likely the same in the year 1910. The House of Sand, on the other hand, is another Brazilian film, which was released four years after â€Å"Behind the Sun†, in 2005. (Netflix, Inc. ) Just like the movie â€Å"Behind the Sun† by â€Å"Walter Salles†, The House of Sand is a movie, which also tells a family Brazilian family story. Essentially, these two Brazilian movies are both produced in the early 20th century and for that fact these two films had been successful on their own ways. Apart from being the same as Brazilian movies,† Behind the Sun† and â€Å" The House of Sand† both happened in the northern part of Brazil. In addition, these two Brazilian movies share a likely family tale in their story. Although, the movies â€Å"Behind the Sun† and â€Å"The House of Sand† are the alike in different aspects, these two Brazilian movies still vary in some manner. First, in the movie Behind the Sun, the focal point of the story is through the connection or relationship between the father and son, while on the movie The House of Sand, the storyline evolves essentially between the mother and daughter relationship. Second, The House of Sand has lighter conflict or dilemma in its story, while the movie Behind the Sun has more serious and critical family conflict or dilemma in its tale. Nevertheless, these two movies are effectively positive, on which a depiction of social and moral lessons on certain issues in our community today. Works Cited IGN Entertainment, Inc. Literature Review:- Most break-ins are opportunistic, not planned and with statistics revealing that burglaries are on the rise day by day not only in the UK but globally, thereby, now is the time for the consumers to take next step in protecting their homes and thus their loved ones too. Summarized important facts that evoked Weather Seal to work on the idea of introducing PowerMax+ Wireless Alarm Control Home Security System as a new business product and researcher to introduce this new product to the company are as follows: Households with no security measures in place are 10 times more likely to be burgled than those with such simple security measures. Results from the British Crime Survey demonstrated that having security measures in place was strongly associated with lower level of victimization. Government officials predict that the economic slow down will lead to â€Å"upward pressure† on levels of property crime. As property crime increases, insurers demand better security to stem losses. 1.7 million burglaries were reported to police in England and Wales during 2007/2008. Home burglaries recorded by the police have risen by 4%, the largest rise in seven years for the period July-September 2008. On the basis of these facts and figures and data already revealed the research has been made via internet to explore the best possible system in order to develop the desired new product for the Weather Seal. As a result of internet research, Stage-Gate System of product development has been shortlisted. STAGE-GATE THE ROADMAP FOR NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT:- The need for lean, rapid and profitable new product development has never been greater. Product life cycles are shorter, competition is more intense and customers are more demanding. Companies that fail to innovate face a grim future. The problem is that winning with new products is not easy. An estimated 46% of the resources that companies devote to the conception, development and launch of new products go to projects that do not succeed they fail in the marketplace or never make it to market. Leading companies have overhauled their product innovation processes, incorporating the critical success factors discovered through best practice research, in the form of a Stage-Gate new product development process. According to several independent research studies (i.e. Product Development Management Association, AMR Research, Booz-Allen Hamilton, etc.) between 70-85% of leading U.S. companies now use Stage-Gate to drive new products to market. A Stage-Gate System is a conceptual and operational road map for moving a new-product project from idea to launch. Stage-Gate divides the effort into distinct stages separated by management decision gates (gatekeeping). Cross-functional teams must successfully complete a prescribed set of related cross-functional activities in each stage prior to obtaining management approval to proceed to the next stage of product development. How Does the Stage-Gate ® Product innovation begins with an idea and ends with the successful launch of a new product. The steps between these points can be viewed as a dynamic process. Stage-Gate divides this process into a series of activities (stages) and decision points (gates). Stages are where the action occurs. The players on the project team undertake key activities to gather information needed to advance the project to the next gate or decision point. Stages are cross-functional (there is no research and development or marketing stage) and each activity is undertaken in parallel to enhance speed to market. To manage risk, the parallel activities in a certain stage must be designed to gather vital information technical, market, financial, operations in order to drive down the technical and business risks. Each stage costs more than the preceding one, resulting in incremental commitments. As uncertainties decrease, expenditures are allowed to rise and risk is managed. In addition to the discover stage, there are five key stages: Stages The structure of each stage is similar: Activities: The work the project leader and the team must undertake based upon their project plan. Integrated analysis: The project leader and teams integrated analysis of the results of all of the functional activities, derived through cross-functional interaction. Deliverables: The presentation of the results of the integrated analysis, which must be completed by the team for submission to the gate. Preceding each stage is a decision point or gate which serves as a Go/Kill and prioritization decision point. Gates are where mediocre projects are culled out and resources are allocated to the best projects. Gates deal with three quality issues: quality of execution; business rationale; and the quality of the action plan. Gates The structure of each gate is similar: Deliverables: Inputs into the gate review what the project leader and team deliver to the meeting. These are defined in advance and are the results of actions from the preceding stage. A standard menu of deliverables is specified for each gate. Criteria: What the project is judged against in order to make the go/kill and prioritization decisions. These criteria are usually organized into a scorecard and include both financial and qualitative criteria. Outputs: Results of the gate review. Gates must have clearly articulated outputs including: a decision (go/kill/hold/recycle) and a path forward (approved project plan, date and deliverables for the next gate agreed upon). What are the benefits of using Stage-Gate ®? The Stage-Gate Product Innovation system has been referred to as the single most important discovery in product innovation empowering almost 85% of all North American companies to achieve improved returns on their product development dollars and to achieve new growth. When implemented properly, Stage-Gate delivers tremendous impact: Accelerates speed-to-market Increases likelihood of product success Introduces discipline into an ordinarily chaotic process Reduces re-work and other forms of waste Improves focus via gates where poor projects are killed Achieves efficient and effective allocation of scarce resources Ensures a complete process no critical steps are omitted The results: A more effective, efficient, faster process that improves the companys (in this case Weather Seal) product innovation results. 4. Cost Incurred on Facilities and Resources Utilized:- Following are some of the items and their approximate costs that were required for the conduction of project work. 5. Sources and Methods:- In order to answer the key aspects of the project studies i.e. how to introduce new product for the company and how to prepare the marketing plan, secondary and primary research will be collected. Both types of research are essential in this project work as they offer crucial results regarding finalization of project report. Furthermore, qualitative data has been collected instead of quantitative data, this is because the available time was not enough to collect and analyze a wide range of data. Secondary Research:- The secondary research consists of â€Å"reanalysing data that have already been collected for some other purpose† (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 2003: 188). In this project studies, we will be interested in information about this national level company overall, the importance and impression of the company in the marketplace and among its customers prior to the launch of new product and off course the utmost important strategic marketing issues affiliated with it. One of the main books used for this is Principles of Marketing (Kotler et al, 2005). These sorts of usage create the part of theoretical frame. The information needed to conduct the project will be collected through the use of external sources of secondary data such as published books and online articles and survey reports. However, the main part of the research focuses on the introduction of new product for the company. In order to collect all the necessary information the researcher will gather internal sources of secondary research. This information includes corporate documentation such as company reports and earlier marketing plans which are available due to solid professional relationship of the researcher with the branch management. The internal sources of secondary research will be backed-up by other external sources such as published general statistics and industry statistics, which have been collected through the use of the internet. Some of the most relevant information collected from online sources regarding UK burglary, fire and child abductions incidents and statistics will be presented in Appendix. This informa tion will be essential to collect and analyzed in order to make the company enable to assess the urgency of new home security system product among the UK citizens. Although secondary research has a number of advantages such as the fact that it is readily available, it saves money and it is not time consuming it also has some disadvantages. In order to use secondary data effectively it is important to make sure that the data is relevant to the specific issue addressed and that it has been classified in a way that is consistent with the study at hand. This consists in making sure that such things as variables and measurements are â€Å"in line† with those used in the investigation. It is also important to make sure the data is accurate and that it comes from the original source and not an intermediate or third-hand report (Ghauri and Gronhaug, 2002). Primary Research:- The secondary research conducted, will be further backed up, by some primary research. This is â€Å"data gathered and assembled specifically for the project at hand† (Zikmund, 1994: 40). 5.2.1 Security Risk Assessment Check Questionaire:- The Weather Seal will create Security risk assessment check questionnaire and researcher will carry the assessment visits with company assessor to observe and record the individual customer needs for statistical purposes. The said questionnaire will be closed end and enable the company and researcher to approve or disapprove the installation of PowerMax+ Wireless Alarm Control Home Security System at the premises. This will also enable the company to estimate the correct number of new product to be remained in stock. The Security risk assessment check questionnaire will be presented in the Appendix. Customer Survey Questionnaire:- As business can only run on the basis of customers. Therefore, it is critically important for Weather Seal to explore the customer views about the company and its new product. A sample close end survey questionnaire will be presented to 50 selected customers along with Security risk assessment check questionnaire to be directly filled by the customers during our visit at their premises. The responses against the survey questionnaire would enable the company to assess the attitude of customers towards the company and its new product. 5.2.3 Interviews:- No specific interviews will be conducted. This is due to the already available massive customer pool of the company all around the UK. However, the researched has suggested the company to publish the comments of few prestigious customers of the company about its performance and customer support and services. These comments will be published in the company new product brochure for the product promotional purposes. Few customer comments will be presented in Appendix. Data Analysis and Interpretations:- After conducting both the primary and secondary in depth researches, it has become possible to present the key findings and data analysis both in terms of figures and percentages. Data Analysis -Secondary Research:- British Crime Figures:- As a result of this type of research, the following key findings have been revealed relating to British crime figures: A home is burgled in UK every 20 seconds. Marketing Implementation Plan for New Product Marketing Implementation Plan for New Product 1. Executive Summary:- With the ever increasing ratio of crime in the UK and all around the world, an unprotected property has become extremely vulnerable, day or night. The project studies helps researcher in understanding how to introduce new product by making the appropriate marking strategy and provides an opportunity to look into insight of the Weather Seal operational activities. 3.

Homelessness in america Essay -- essays research papers fc

Homelessness in America   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Here in Tahoe, we are lucky enough to experience a great quality of life, and only a few have to face the horrible life of poverty and homelessness. However, nationwide, even right outside the basin, homelessness is a growing epidemic across the country. There are many ways one can become homeless; for the most part poverty. There are also different concentrations of homeless in different types of terrain, such as urban or suburban areas. Last, there is the ever- growing homeless population, and how much money it costs us for others to live in poverty. These are the questions we ask ourselves about homelessness, and the only way we can help is to know the facts about this lingering subject.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The biggest reason people are homeless is simply because of poverty. They just can't afford to have a place to live and food in their mouths. As of 2000, 11.3% of the US population lived in poverty.(1) The number of people in extreme poverty has been increasing since 1999, accounting for 39% of people in poverty, and making less than half the amount of income a person considered in poverty makes.(3) With this amount of people living in poverty, it's no wonder why there are so many homeless today. The reason people are in poverty is because of inflation since the 70's, and the loss of affordable housing projects.(4) This accounts for almost all homeless, but there are also other factors that can contribute as well. There are many people with addiction problems that make them homeless. It's not because they are addicted to drugs, because many people live quite well with an addiction problem, but they could be in a hard point financially, and could be driven to the s treets because of money issues. The hard part for them is getting off the streets once they're on them. Since so much of their money goes to drugs, most drug addicts can't overcome being homeless once they have been for more than 6 months.(1) Mental illness is also a big issue causing homelessness. Approximately 22% of single white male homeless people are suffering from a severe mental illness.(1) The main reason is because Millions of mental patients were dis-institutionalized in the 50's and 60's, and affordable housing wasn't an issue until the 80's, when many of them were reaching 50 and couldn't work and afford housing. L... ... are seen and treated in our society. The biggest part of the problem is the way people act about and to homeless people. It's ridiculous to treat anyone different because of their social status; it's pretty much racism. Simple things people can do is just treat people equally, no matter who they are, and not just basing it on how they look.Homelessness is one of the fastest growing epidemics in the United States right now. There are over 3.5 million homeless people in the US now. Also, a quarter of people living on the streets are severely mentally ill, and must be admitted to institutions, and have the capability to if they were given or knew they had a chance. The poverty level is constantly rising, and is forcing more and more people onto the streets. We can just sit around and hope someone else does it, or we can take action. Next time you walk by homeless man or family, and before you make a judgement about them, just take a minute and think about how easily it could be you . Apple: Competitive Strategies and Government Policies Essay

Abstracts For every profit oriented industry to survive in the globalize market; they must employed competition strategies that suit their operations and also keep in mind their competitors and target set to be achieved. This makes every company feel the pressure to be successful and to maintain leading the industry. This pressure plays significant role in the survival of industry in the competitive market. The effect of pressure faced by industries can either positive for the leading industry or negative when overpowered by rivals. Apple has gone into the technological mobile devices industry with a blast and imparted apprehension into contenders inside the same business. In spite of the fact that Apple costs their items/products at a higher offering value, their products are regularly alluded to as first class and worth the additional expense. The expense of Apple’s stock, which was seen as a shortcoming to competitors, has demonstrated to help support in their prosperity Introduction Competition and Mergers As market become globalizes and new companies enter the competitive market, there is always a desire to be one of the leading manufacturers in the field of production for both the entrants and the existing companies. Apple is one of the companies that strive to be excellent in the field of its manufacture products. Being a multi-billion dollar industry in technology that has over 30 years of experience that can teach any new business how to be successful. Moreover, Apple has gained from past missteps like valuing an item too high furthermore constraining the color of a product to one color. Case in point, when the IPod first turned out in the mid 2000’s it was valued at $999.99 one penny shy of one thousand dollars. The IPod was valued as of right now on the grounds that they needed to appear like a select product. The ruin to their new product was that it  just adjusted with Apple PCs confining the adaptability of the select product Apple can show another new entrants organization about globalization, in light of the fact that they are a worldwide business that has made billions of dollars and will keep on making billions. Apple conceives brand new ideas by making their products quicker and with more limit than contenders. Likewise, Apple has a tendency to be the first to make an item before contenders. The IPad was a unique making of Apple that was in front of contenders. After the arrival of the IPad contenders took after with their own particular structure called the tablet. Apple has yet to converge with another organization and ought to never need to do as such. Apple makes the greater part of their items themselves and has ended up being a standout amongst the best organizations in the innovation business. However Apple has purchased a rate of Beats which is organization that creates e arphones for music gadgets. One accepts that Apple purchased a rate of Beats in light of the fact that they needed to differentiate their portfolio Government Policies and Regulations The business electronic gadget industry is convoluted. Concerning matter of laws, regulations, duties, and government regulations, various variables apply. With such a significant industry, different relationship at the neighborhood, state, and even government level collaborate to administer the business. Additionally, impressively more affiliations exist that are secretly run help to control the business. As a rule, when referencing systems and regulations, the Commercial Electronic gadget Industry is subject to different sorts of administrative laws and regulations. These laws may fuse the laws that relate to security. You moreover have a couple of governments that deal with the neighborhood substance, charges and tolls; they may constrain duties or other exchange obstructions too. At the point when there are new institutions or any sorts of changes to existing authorizations it can bring about those in the business electronic gadgets industry needing to take care of an additional expense. Reliably administrators are getting the chance to be stricter with the laws and regulations administering the business electronic gadgets industry. The present and expected government policies and regulations fusing expenses and regulations set up to convey issues related to externalities. By and  large the administration arrangements towards the environment and expenses, has control measures for regulation and enactment. Through your organization, the plans are planned to accomplish more profitable use of the advantages that are made open to the clients. To propel a substitution between the advantages that is present and gives a spark from the organization procedure. While the assembly decreases to present natural evaluations so the present costs are regarding natures with the understanding of the essential issue in setting obligations for the state. â€Å"Our commitment to customer privacy doesn’t stop because of a government information request†(Apple, 2015). Government information requesting is a result of cooperating in the advanced age. Apple has trust in being as clear and straightforward as the law allows about what information is requested from the affiliation. Moreover, Apple has never worked with any governing body office from any country to make a â€Å"roundabout access† in any of their products. Apple has similarly never allowed any administration access to their servers, and communicates that they never will. Global Competition and Management Decisions Apple, Inc.’s change from the organization it was grinding a way’s initiation to the organization it is in the present day is an aftereffect of numerous vital administration choices. These choices help them focus on shopper needs while expanding piece of the pie. As showed by showcasing magazine (2010), â€Å"Apple has built up itself as a family unit name in a business sector where innovation is continually advancing, and customers energetically anticipate the following huge thing† (p. 18). Notwithstanding the expanded rivalry in the versatile correspondence and individualized computing industry, Apple has kept up its position as the business leaders. While Apple keeps on endeavoring to give inventive items to customers, contenders compass to surpass Apple’s achievement in the business. Carare (2013) expressed that mobile phone makers get generally high benefits. Indeed, even under these circumstances, a few business visionaries make utilization of out of line exercises to draw in clients, which brings about benefit. Apple picks to use reasonable exchange practices even while contenders have the capacity to duplicate their items accordingly  lessening Apple’s preference over competition. Apple products are outlined in California, however keeping in mind the end goal to keep up their competitive edge; they lessen generation costs by having their items collected in production lines the world over. While this could open them up to liabilities in regards to uncalled for work rehearses, Apple lives up to expectations nearly with its suppliers to guarantee moral strategies as to remote specialists. Around the world Apple workers are united in bringing correspondence, human rights, and admiration for the earth to the most profound layers of our inventory network†. Preparing projects mean to instruct and engage laborers while trying to energize security of our common assets Jeff Williams, Senior Vice President of Operations at Apple, (2015). Local Competition Apple has a wide range of difficulties in the distinctive competitive markets particularly with their local competition. A major test is the Research and Development which they generally need to remain focused of to appear as something else all through their operation. There will dependably be bugs that they will need to alter yet they must keep focused of it. Another test for Apple is that with a specific end goal to remain focused of their position with Windows Operating System around the globe and being even more extensive spread contrasted with the mackintosh operating system. Windows operating system is on MacBook’s and I-Mac(Desktops) of Apple, they need to move in the direction of across the board accessibility of Macintosh, it is free from infection not at all like Windows where consistently some or alternate infection is found making issues in equipment and programming. Advancements in the Windows platform, incorporating those included in Windows 98 and Windows NT, or those normal to be incorporated in new forms of Windows to be presented later on, have added elements to the Windows stage/platform that make the contrasts between the Mac OS and Microsoft’s Windows operating systems less significant. Mac has and is at present taking and will keep on making moves to react to the focused weights being set on its PC deals as an aftereffect of the late advancements in the Windows operating system. Apple’s future combined working results and monetary condition are all that much reliant on the capacity to continue to create changes to the Macintosh stage to keep up saw utilitarian  preferences over competing stages. As clients become globalized, they constrain companies to consider globalizing their plan of action. A contender like Apple who globalizes promptly can have an extraordinary chance to make financial aspects of scale and scoop and the upper point of preference. The game changers picked up by an early participant into a business sector. With regards to developing markets, Apple does and will represent a danger now and later on inside of the group of their rivals. Conclusion Apple has demonstrated during the time to surpass with meeting all commitments through legitimate maters, exceeding expectations inside their industry, opposing mergers, and emerging to local competition. Macintosh is an effective organization that has stood out with the arrival of items like the IPad, IPod, and IPhones. Apple is by all account not the only organization that exists inside of the versatile innovation industry, yet Apple has made a point to be one of the top contenders inside the business. The fate of Apple is hinting at no easing off in their triumphs References Apple. (2011, Aug 10). Marketing 18. Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/887273428?accountid=458 Apple, Inc. The Cystic Fibrosis Gene Essays - Cystic Fibrosis, Protein Families

The Cystic Fibrosis Gene Essays - Cystic Fibrosis, Protein Families The Cystic Fibrosis Gene Biology - Genetics The Cystic Fibrosis Gene Introduction: Cystic fibrosis is an inherited autosomal recessive disease that exerts its main effects on the digestive system and the lungs. This disease is the most common genetic disorder amongst Caucasians. Cystic fibrosis affects about one in 2,500 people, with one in twenty five being a heterozygote. With the use of antibiotics, the life span of a person afflicted with CF can be extended up to thirty years however, most die before the age of thirteen.1 Since so many people are affected by this disease, it's no wonder that CF was the first human genetic disease to be cloned by geneticists. In this paper, I will be focusing on how the cystic fibrosis gene was discovered while at the same time, discussing the protein defect in the CF gene, the bio-chemical defect associated with CF, and possible treatments of the disease. Finding the Cystic Fibrosis Gene: The classical genetic approach to finding the gene that is responsible for causing a genetic disease has been to first characterize the bio-chemical defect within the gene, then to identify the mutated protein in the gene of interest, and finally to locate the actual gene. However, this classical approach proved to be impractical when searching for the CF gene. To find the gene responsible for CF, the principle of "reverse genetics" was applied. Scientists accomplished this by linking the disease to a specific chromosome. After this linkage, they isolated the gene of interest on the chromosome and then tested its product.2 Before the disease could be linked to a specific chromosome, a marker needed to be found that would always travel with the disease. This marker is known as a Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism or RFLP for short. RFLP's are varying base sequences of DNA in different individuals which are known to travel with genetic disorders.3 The RFLP for cystic fibrosis was discovered through the techniques of Somatic Cell Hybridization and through Southern Blot Electrophoresis (gel separation of DNA). By using these techniques, three RFLP's were discovered for CF; Doc RI, J3.11, and Met. Utilizing in situ hybridization, scientists discovered the CF gene to be located on the long arm of chromosome number seven. Soon after identifying these markers, another marker was discovered that segregated more frequently with CF than the other markers. This meant the new marker was closer to the CF gene. At this time, two scientists named Lap-Chu Tsui and Francis Collins were able to isolate probes from the CF interval. They were now able to utilize to powerful technique of chromosome jumping to speed up the time required to isolate the CF gene much faster than if they were to use conventional genetic techniques.3 In order to determine the exact location of the CF gene, probes were taken from the nucleotide sequence obtained from chromosome jumping. To get these probes, DNA from a horse, a cow, a chicken, and a mouse were separated using Southern Blot electrophoresis. Four probes were found to bind to all of the vertebrate's DNA. This meant that the base pairs within the probes discovered contained important information, possibly even the gene. Two of the four probes were ruled out as possibilities because they did not contain open reading frames which are segments of DNA that produce the mRNA responsible for genes. The Northern Blot electrophoresis technique was then used to distinguish between the two probes still remaining in order to find out which one actually contained the CF gene. This could be accomplished because Northern Blot electrophoresis utilizes RNA instead of DNA. The RNA of cell types affected with CF, along with the RNA of unaffected cell types were placed on a gel. Probe number two bound to the RNA of affected cell types in the pancreas, colon, and nose, but did not bind to the RNA from non-affected cell types like those of the brain and heart. Probe number one did not bind exclusively to cell types from CF affected areas like probe number two did. From this evidence, it was determined that probe number two contained the CF gene. While isolating the CF gene and screening the genetic library made from mRNA (cDNA library), it was

Allergies essays

Allergies essays There are millions of Americans today whom suffer from allergies, catch colds or burn from hot fevers. These Americans depend on over the counter drugs, which are convenient to attain. I believe that the average American who has caught the common cold in the winter would just run to the nearest store to get some medicine rather than make an appointment with the doctor to get a simple prescription. The doctors schedule would be so filled up with such simple illnesses! Advertising on television allows people to be informed of what medicine today has to offer. Advertising is meant for a two-way gain from the consumer and the company. Television advertising is not responsible for Americans belief that over the counter drugs are cure-alls. Americans must be very gullible to believe everything they see on television. It is quite understandable for a child to believe such things, but an average adult should catch something that is exaggerated and embellished. Medicine is taken very seriously because it involves our health, and health is something that we value very much because it affects us in every way. I have seen many commercials in my lifetime, and over the counter drugs are common. I believe that these commercials are more beneficial to consumers rather than harmful. From commercials, the consumers are informed of new upgraded medicine. From this information, the consumer is given a choice whether the product benefits them. This way, the company also benefits because their sales will increase. The more sales they make the more money they gain, the more money they gain, the more they can use the money to research in better medicine for the people. A never-ending cycle can be seen from this. There is in some cases, that the medicine that the consumer purchases will not heal their cold, allergy, or fever. Each individual has his or her unique body that requires different attention. The medicine products only tries to ...

â€Å"What is going on around me; is my mind focused on reality or is it in an illusionary state?† When dealing with real situations, awareness is an important concept of life. Many times circumstances in life may have huge impacts on individuals and their lives. It could cause minds to escape reality and enter a different realm, which consists of illusions. In â€Å"Araby†, the main character displays the act of taking part in an illusion of conversing with a young lady whom he adores. He wishes to go to Araby, a bazaar in order to spend the day with her. However, as a result of his strong anticipation he fails to realize that in reality she never spoke to him. It is apparent that one should maintain a focus on reality rather than hoping for the best by getting lost in a world of illusions. Most of the time each morning, the character in â€Å"Araby† stares at the young lady across the street. He takes most of his time looking at her physical body and keeps her figure as an image in his head where ever he goes. Usually, when a person has a strong desire to meet someone, he will perhaps go out of his way and put effort. However, contrast to this idea, the character in â€Å"Araby†, does not take enough action to make that possible, instead he just wastes an enormous amount of time gazing. The character is stuck in his own little world of dreams because he has set up his mentality to focus on illusions rather than actual effort in reality. Speaking is another component needed not only to commence but also to perpetuate conversations in a relationship. Communication is the cornerstone of any relationship therefore; if a two people do not converse there is no such thing as a relationship. The character in â€Å"Araby† does not talk to the young lady whom he adores, rather, he just imagines what it would be like if he actually did speak to her and what she would say to him. Once again, it is apparent that the character is unaware of reality a... Free Essays on Araby Free Essays on Araby Essay â€Å"Araby† By: James Joyce In the short story â€Å"Araby† by James Joyce the theme that people think they really are in love when they really have no clue what love is, is present. The boy says that he is in love with his friend’s sister yet he doesn’t know a thing about her except for her usual habits and routines that he witness’s everyday. He doesn’t even know what love is; he says he is in love because the feeling he is has inside for Mangan’s sister is new to him. James Joyce uses these different contrasts on love to show us that people really have no clue what love is and just say they are because it makes them feel less afraid of love. The little boy in this story says he is madly in love with Mangan’s sister yet he doesn’t have the slightest clue about who she is and what she stands for. All he knows is what time she goes to school at, and that’s only because he stares at her door from the front parlour. â€Å" I had never spoken to her, except for a few casual words, and yet her name was like a summons to all my foolish blood.† He’s never said a word to her outside the usual hi, or bye but this doesn’t mean anything. He doesn’t know anything about her except for her observable daily routine. How she walks to school everyday or how she calls out for her brother when they are playing together. He knows he’s foolish for being â€Å"in love† with her because he doesn’t know a thing about her and that she’s older than him and comes from a family of higher class than his. The only time the two really talk is when she asks him if he’s g oing to the bazaar, but he’s too caught up in her heavenly image that he doesn’t recall what he said to her except for the fact that he was going to buy her something. In the end he goes to the bazaar and he doesn’t know what to get her. This is an indication that he doesn’t really know who she is because if he did he’d have an idea of what she’... Free Essays on Araby Innocence to Experience In every person’s life there is a movement from a stage of innocence to a more mature and experience stage. That movement begins from the moment that he or she is brought into this world and ends when he or she dies. The movement from innocence to experience is triggered by events where he or she is forced to learn from his or her actions. Once they have learned the consequences of their actions and how to react to situations, that lesson will stick with them for the rest of their lives. They have gained more experience and, at the same time, lost a little of their innocence. That movement is demonstrated in â€Å"Araby,† written by James Joyce, with a young boy who seems to be a little naive an is going through things in his life that he does not quite understand yet. It is also shown in â€Å"A & P,† written by John Updike, through the eyes of a teenager named Sammy who seems to think using something else instead of his brain. In both of these stories certain events happen the these two characters that makes them more experience and think about life more maturely at the end. In â€Å"Araby,† the boy with no name seems to fall in love with his friend’s sister but never really tells her. When she steps outside, the boy’s â€Å"heart leaps† (Joyce 843), and he rushes so that he can follow her every morning. Maybe that is the way the boy is trying to impress her. Eventually, the boy becomes so preoccupied with impressing the girl that he begins to just forget about everything else that is going on in his life: "I wished to annihilate the tedious intervening days. I chafed against the work of school. At night in my bedroom and buy day in the classroom, her image came between me and the page I strove to read [†¦] I had hardly any patience with the serious work of life which, now that it stood between me and my desire, seemed to me child's play, ugly monotonous child's play." (Joyce 844). One d... Free Essays on Araby After reading â€Å"Araby†, I felt youthful, curious and amused. The story was intriguing and well written. It had the ability to take you there and place you in the middle of the story. I was taken back to childhood and able to relate to the young boy. The story relates to many of our childhoods and us. It allows us to experience the mixed feelings we get and how we become nervous and exciting over everyday childhood experiences. While reading â€Å"Araby†, I thought back to my youth and found myself in similar situations as the boy. I can remember wandering through the neighborhood searching the abandon houses, finding articles that belonged to the previous tenants. We would linger into abandoned buildings and â€Å"explore† from basement to rooftop. We would find ourselves in trouble because of the dangers, yet we continued despite the warnings. One of us would be on the look out for parents and police. One sight of either would send us scattering for the metal yard looking for a hiding spot until the coast was clear. The boy’s adventures in the apartment buildings took him into the lives of the tenants. He often wondered about their habits and how they went about their day. He enjoyed finding their possessions and searching through them, looking for clues. I can remember avoiding girls that I had crushes on. I felt they would laugh if I spoke to them. When the opportunity p resented itself, I would find myself confused about what to say. I would become nervous, anxious and excited at the same time. Young boys go through a difficult time relating to girls. The girls seem so mature and out of our league at the time. They have grown past us and we are trying to play catch up. Youth can be exciting and emotionally draining at the same time. The boy and I had similar activities. I felt curious because I had to imagine the scene and the contents. I was curious about how old the boy was. I imagined him bei...

In 1914, Britain reigned over a quarter of the world’s population, it was a very powerful country, stratified in a class system, and that individuals were determined by their class ranks. About fourteen million civilians participated in the war and so they played a leading role in changing the class structure of Britain of 1914.2 The First World War changed the social class structure in Britain in many ways, first, it reduced the number of servants employed, increased the number of salaried workers, and increased ownership of the country’s wealth.3 This paper explores how the Great War changed the class structure in Britain covering its effects on the upper, middle and lower classes as well as the role of women in the how and how this change their status in the society. Class is a social category where individuals are grouped together based on their status in the society. It refers to an individual’s position in the social hierarchy based on their accessibility to wealth and power and this implies that those who are wealthy and powerful are ranked high as compared to those who are poor and less powerful. Notably, the nature of the class system is usually known by the distribution of wealth in the country.4 The British life was strictly stratified into a class system; however, during the war the traditional class differences were softened.5 The aristocracy was the wealthiest and most powerful people in Britain during the war, and they had influence because of their wealth and power. The British middle class valued education and generally, they work as managers, civil servants, or

Economics for Business and Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 4

Economics for Business and Management - Essay Example eate irregularities such as economic slumps are caused because of government trade restrictions, excessive power of trade unions and monetary policies of governments. The French economist J.B. was a prominent support of market system and in the early nineteenth century he argued, â€Å"Every seller brings a buyer to market†, which means supply establishes its own demand (The Socialist Party, 1997). Four major factors can determine how effectively market system can work. These factors include the profit motive, availability of information to producers and consumers, accurate pricing and ease in distributing resources (Bized). Free market system has the tendency to allocate resources where the most profit can be generated because profit generation is the primary motive of market system and the system naturally explores the areas which can maximise the profits. Moreover, supporters of market system argue that price mechanism is the best way for the efficient allocation of limited resources. McConnell, Brue and Flynn (2009) have identified three merits of market system which attracts the support of people and make this system as the best way to improve investment climate. First, the efficient allocation of resources in the market system is possible because this system encourages the production of products most needed by the society. This system encourages the adoption of techniques which are more efficient from production point-of-view and also promotes the adoption of latest techniques. Second, the three skills promoted by market system include hard work, acquisition and innovation. Third, market system gives personal freedom rather than central planning which encourages self-interest of entrepreneurs. Various examples in the real world economy justify the beliefs of the supporters of market system.
